3 hurt as car slams into Burbank post office

March 24, 2008, 2:27 PM PDT

An elderly woman drove her car through the front of a Burbank post office this afternoon, injuring three people, police said.

The incident was reported just after noon at the Burbank Post Office at 2140 N. Hollywood Way, said Burbank Police Sgt. Tracy Sanchez.

Three people were hurt -- the driver, a post office employee and a 62-year old man -- though none of the injuries were serious, Sanchez said.

The 62-year-old man suffered a head injury and was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Burbank. He was "conscious and alert," and appeared to be recovering well, Sanchez said.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash. The driver, who police said was older than 65, may have stepped on the gas thinking it was the brake, Sanchez said.

"Typically, that's what happens in these cases," Sanchez said. "It was an accident. There was no mechanical failure and no intent to cause harm."
